Within The Wellness Report community, we know that the word 'meditation' can sometimes scares one who thinks meditation is a religious act. Well, while we do recommend to meditate religiously, the act of meditation itself is a psychological method and not a belief system.

Not a religion, what is it then? Most meditation techniques belong to a cultural tradition that often links back to religion. Well-known meditation techniques come from Buddhism, Hinduism but don't forget the Islamic Sufis also practice meditation. Meditation is simple practice available to all. one that non-religious and honestly a positive addition to our daily lives. Meditation is attaining a state of consciousness that is totally different from the normal waking state. The more quiet we are in our minds, the more we gain clarity, calmness and acceptance to how our lives are. We take the role of an observer of ourselves instead of the constant reaction to things around us.
Why the need to turn inward? The outward projection seems to be the norm. When we feel angry, we react or instantly place blame on something or someone else. No one really taught us (in the school system) to look within. But honestly, what the heck is that? Meditation is the channel that brings us within, to gain more self-understanding and to look at ourselves first before reacting aimlessly all the time. This control over the mind goes beyond just self awareness and understanding but to experience thoughts and emotions that brings peace, happiness and calmness too. Anyone who tried to meditate knows that the mind is the biggest obstacle - as we like to call it, the mind has a mind of its own.
It is normal that we humans attach, judge and expect things to happen to our live and most times, these expectations come from within our mind. And as the saying goes, attachments lead to suffering - and that is when in meditation we learn to quiet the mind, detach from the stories that our mind creates.
Why should i meditate? You don't need to go to a cave to meditate. Honestly, make your own little 'cave' at home or in the office. Call this your zen or pause space. All you need is 10 minutes of your day or even small pauses within the day (2-5mins) in between work to calm the mind when you feel overwhelmed. Besides the obvious benefits of calming the mind, meditation has been scientifically proven to bring power and radical improvement to your quality of life, including cultivating physical, cognitive and psychological benefits. Just take 10 minutes each day and start to see the rapid transformation in your life.
